Open-ended Math for Young Learners
How many times have you heard the phrase “I hate math”? Math is so much more than answering sets and sets of equations on a worksheet or textbook. Math is explaining, reasoning, questioning, analyzing and reflecting. Math is creative and math should be fun.
Open-ended math problems are a great way to get students actively engaged in math in a safe, “non-threatening” way since these questions have more than one possible answer. They allow students to problem solve, analyze, reason, question, reflect and opens a window into understanding their mathematical thinking. This course is geared towards teachers of students in grades K-2, but can easily be adapted to older students as well. About the Instructor
Melissa Clarke has been teaching for over 15 years and is currently teaching 1st grade in Ontario, Canada. She has a Bachelor of Education degree, as well as a Bachelor of Arts in Early Childhood Education. Melissa strives to offer children an environment that is safe, warm, positive, inclusive, and supports children’s natural curiosity and exploration. She uses open-ended math in her classroom to get students to problem solve, reason, question, reflect, and get creative with math.
